Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk said he will consider his future with club and country in the coming weeks amid disappointment after Wednesday’s European Championship semi-final exit.

Van Dijk said he would spend the coming weeks deciding his next career move after nine years and 75 caps for the Netherlands. The 33-year-old has one season left on his contract with Liverpool.

“I have no idea now,” Van Dijk told reporters after England beat the Netherlands 2-1 to set up a final against Spain on Sunday. “I will think hard this summer about what I want to do at club level and as an international player. Then we will try again but first we have to recover from this.”

“After a season like this, where all sorts of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s over,” Van Dijk said.

“Especially in the second half I felt it was going to be ours. But (Oli) Watkins maybe got too much space and finished the game well.”

“It’s very painful to concede that goal so late in the game and to come away empty-handed now. We gave our best, everyone gave their best, and if the goal came in that way in the last minute, it’s very unfortunate. Yes… sorry.”
