Former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst made his Championship debut on Monday — more than two years after joining Burnley.

Erik ten Hag heads into the new season as the United boss with many concerns, not least his shaky midfield. However, as far as the number nine position is concerned, the Dutchman is blessed with two highly-rated strikers in Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

That was not the case in January of 2023 when United were left scrambling for a new striker following Cristiano Ronaldo’s mid-season exit and Anthony Martial’s fitness.

Ten Hag, as he has regularly done during his spell at Old Trafford, turned to a Dutchman for rescue. The Red Devils signed Weghorst on loan from Burnley on the back of his prolific stint at Besiktas.

The Netherlands international only managed to grab two goals in 31 appearances for United. However, he was still adored by fans for his work ethic and the passion he showed every time he stepped onto the pitch.

Weghorst returned to Burnley last summer before joining TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on loan for the 2023/24 campaign. Due to several loan stints, the 32-year-old target man avoided playing in the Championship.

However, on Monday, he finally made his debut in England’s second tier, coming off the bench against Luton Town.

Weghorst was introduced in the 82nd minute, and by that time, Burnley had already put the game to bed, having scored four goals past Luton, whose only goal of the fixture was scored by former United youngster Tahith Chong.

However, the ex-United forward might leave Burnley again, having reportedly attracted interest from Ten Hag’s former side, Ajax.

In 2023, United approached Burnley to solve their goal-scoring crisis. This summer, they have knocked on the Turf Moor door to address their midfield problems.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Burnley midfielder Sander Berge has verbally agreed to join United.

However, the Championship side are yet to give their green light to the move, as they are hoping to raise as much as £30 million from Berge’s sale. The Premier League giants, meanwhile, are keen to get the deal done for a figure closer to £20m.
