Former Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane endured a debut to forget for Como 1907 on Sunday.
The Frenchman departed Old Trafford at the end of last season upon the expiration of his contract and eventually moved to the north of Italy to ply his trade in Como, Lombardy.
Still only 31, Varane attracted interest from many sides. As such, his decision to join the newly promoted Serie A outfit raised a few eyebrows.
Many fans switched on to catch a glimpse of the former United and Real Madrid superstar making his debut for Como. But both the player and his fans were left frustrated with what transpired less than half an hour into his debut.
Como manager Cesc Fàbregas handed the World Cup winner his first start in the Coppa Italia against Sampdoria.
However, Varane had to come off in the 23rd minute after experiencing discomfort in his left knee.
He left the pitch with the help of physios and was replaced by Edoardo Goldaniga.
Como’s journey in the competition also did not last long as Sampdoria knocked them out after winning 4-3 on penalties.
Reflecting on the unfortunate moment, Fàbregas revealed in his post-match press conference: “He was supposed to play half the match and Goldaniga half, I’m sorry about the injury. It seems he hurt his knee, but we have to wait for the tests.”
Como start their Serie A adventure against Juventus next week, and Varane’s injury is likely to intensify the camp’s concerns heading into what is sure to be a very challenging outing in Turin.
Varane established himself as a fan favourite at United, impressing fans and pundits alike with his “Rolls-Royce” style of defending. However, his persistent injury issues meant the managers at Old Trafford could never truly rely on him for an extended period of time.
The Frenchman’s fitness combined with his high wages played a big part in United’s decision to part ways with him this summer.
