In a pioneering event, Special Olympics Middle East and North Africa The Middle East and North Africa region has achieved many firsts at the regional level Champions Unified Schools (UCS) The competition represents a major milestone in our mission to expand inclusivity and unified sports throughout the region. This historic gathering has set new standards, bringing together programmes, Youth leaders and ambassadors to celebrate unity, sportsmanship and the power of inclusion. For the first time, Special Olympics MENA hosted a dedicated UCS regional competition, bringing together young athletes and leaders from across the region to compete in… Unified Sports .

Programs with well-established UCS initiatives – incl Egypt , Jordan , Morocco and United Arab Emirates – They showed the strength of their athletes through fierce and friendly competition. Programs in which you competed Basketball 3×3 With over 20 UCS representing those programs. These programs pioneered UCS programming and provided inspiration to others through their commitment and success in unified sports. Watching these young athletes compete demonstrated the power of inclusive communities and the transformative impact of UCS on individuals and schools.

This event is a testament to the dedication of UCS athletes, coaches and partners in promoting an inclusive culture. It has provided a platform where young people of all abilities can come together, form connections and showcase their skills in a supportive and enabling environment.

Another first was to bring together programs from across the Special Olympics MENA region to collaboratively expand UCS initiatives. This event brought together existing UCS programs and newcomers, fostering an environment in which ideas, strategies, and best practices were exchanged. The commitment to developing UCS in more communities has never been stronger, as programs across the region have pledged to expand opportunities for youth to participate in unified sports.

This event also marks the first time that two regional events have been hosted at one university, the American University in Cairo (AUC). This unique collaboration underscores the exceptional support we receive from SO Egypt and the American University in Cairo, reflecting a shared commitment to promoting inclusivity within academic institutions. The success of this partnership exemplifies the power of local support in bringing UCS initiatives to life.

Special Olympics Benchmarks in the Middle East and North Africa: Impact across the region

As of July 2024, Special Olympics MENA includes more than 500 UCS initiatives, with more than 173,000 youth participating in UCS programs. Additionally, more than 1,900 teachers and coaches have been trained to promote inclusivity in their schools, and more than 15,100 partners and athletes are actively involved in unified sports. These numbers reflect the deep and growing impact of UCS across the region, creating communities where young people of all abilities are included and celebrated.

The first-ever UCS regional competition was more than just a series of events; It was a powerful statement about the power of unified sports and the importance of inclusion. By bringing together programs from across the MENA region to compete, collaborate and celebrate, Special Olympics has fostered a new sense of unity and purpose. Each “first” achieved during this event sets a precedent for the future, paving the way for more inclusive schools, stronger partnerships, and a shared vision of a world where everyone is valued.

This competition has paved the way for continued growth, unity and inclusion throughout the Special Olympics MENA region.
