Participants competed in the Unified Sports Excellence in Action Workshop.

In July 2024, Special Olympics World Center and Special Olympics Argentina hosted the “Excellence in Action: Scaling Up Unified Champion Schools” workshop, supported by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al NahyanPresident of the United Arab Emirates, an event that aims to introduce and expand Unified Heroes Schools (UCS) Programming.

Day 1: July 1

The event was opened with a keynote speech by Mr. Rashid Al Hamoudi, Representative of the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Argentina, who warmly welcomed the participants.

“We are all committed to integrating our efforts to develop the skills and potential of persons with disabilities through education, training and lifelong learning, and to raise them to the highest levels of participation and influence in our contemporary societies.”

Participants explored the basic steps to launching Special Olympics programs. Based on the experience of Special Olympics Argentina, they explored effective implementation strategies.

“We are excited to partner with leaders in the region and foster the development of more inclusive learning communities,” said Mercedes Felder, Executive Director. Special Olympics Argentina.

In particular, youth gained insights into the importance of leadership and its pivotal role in scaling UCS within their countries. In addition, both youth leaders and program staff learned how to promote inclusive mindsets and behaviors, a fundamental framework for scaling UCS.

Special Olympics program leaders, mentors, and youth, both with and without intellectual disabilities, developed a strategy for the future of UCS.

Day 1: July 2

The second day was filled with strong focus on Unified SportsParticipants not only learned the steps needed to start Unified Sports in schools, but also experienced its impact firsthand through a Unified Soccer match. In doing so, participants learned leadership activities that emphasized communication and teamwork. The day concluded with an immersive cultural experience where the group toured the famous Teatro Colón, where they enjoyed the rich heritage of Buenos Aires. Adult leaders joined a youth leadership activity, learning practical exercises to teach youth collaboration, communication, and teamwork.

Day 1: July 3

On the final day, the focus shifted to practical implementation. Program staff and youth leaders collaborated to develop actionable plans for launching UCS programs in their countries. Local implementers from Special Olympics Argentina shared best practices and techniques, and provided insights on how to successfully launch and scale UCS.

Over the course of these three days, the Excellence in Action: Expanding Unified Champion Schools workshop not only provided participants with the knowledge and tools to expand Unified Champion Schools, but also promoted unity and inclusion.

“The development of this event reinforces the region’s commitment to expanding UCS’s work, as we empower program leaders and equip them with the tools to become agents of change for inclusive education in their programs and countries,” said Johami Alabi, Director of Organizational Development for Special Olympics Latin America. “We use sports and youth empowerment as tools for social inclusion in our communities.”

The event highlighted the collective commitment to building a more inclusive world through education and sport.
