Gabriel Bortoleto produced a performance to remember as he went from last on the grid to the top step of the podium in the Monza Feature Race.
The McLaren Development driver started both races from P22 after spinning to a stop in qualifying. He finished in a tie for P8 with Dennis Hauger in the Sprint, before returning on Sunday to take his second win of the season.
F2: Maloney beats rivals Hadjar and Aron to take pole in Monza
He made a strong start before a Safety Car caused by Hauger stopping on track – following a collision with Ritomo Miyata – gave the Brazilian driver a cheap pit stop and the net race lead.
From then on, he picked his way through the drivers who had not stopped before going off into the distance to win by an eye-catching nine seconds.
Pole-sitter Zane Maloney rued the untimely Safety Car but finished in a well-earned second place for Rodin Motorsport, with Trident’s Richard Verschoor taking the final spot on the podium.
