Maloney had earlier been involved in a collision with fellow Championship contender Paul Aron. The Hitech Pulse-Eight driver had been running in the points but finished at the back of the field after sustaining front wing damage.
Jak Crawford finished in P6 for DAMS Lucas Oil after pulling off a late overtake on Fittipaldi, who ended up in seventh.
Invicta Racing’s Gabriel Bortoleto also put in an eye-catching performance ahead of the Feature Race. The McLaren Development driver started in P22 but fought through the field to finish eighth.
He, however, was tied with MP Motorsport’s Dennis Hauger across the line, meaning that both drivers were forced to split the final point.
The drivers and teams will now use what they have learned from the Sprint ahead of Sunday’s 30-lap Feature Race, which is set to get underway at 10:05 local time.
