Manchester United are still in with a chance to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney before the end of the summer transfer window.

Prior to the arrival of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, Man United were constantly linked to Toney, with the club hosting internal discussions over a potential purchase.

This came after Brentford reportedly slashed their asking price by £30 million to around £50 million as they sought to avoid allowing the England star to depart the club for free next summer with his contract coming to an end.

Still, this price could be viewed as steep for a player approaching the age of 30 whose contract also happens to be running out, with no further movements from United being reported.

According to Fabrizio Romano, however, that could all change.

Speaking to CaughtOffside, Romano suggested that one cannot rule out the possibility that United will swoop in with a bid to sign Toney in the current transfer window.

“I think there’s still a chance for a move to happen this summer for Ivan Toney,” the journalist explained. “There could be movements in the next days and weeks, but there’s nothing imminent so far.”

Still, Romano was hesitant to list United as a frontrunner in the race for Toney’s signature, reminding: “We have to see about which clubs have a concrete interest because about 10 different clubs have been rumoured to be interested in him this summer. I don’t want to put out names without any concrete updates but, for sure, it’s still an open situation.”

For United, price may no longer be a priority when it comes to determining whether or not to acquire an additional striker, especially if an injuries strike again.

On Tuesday, The Peoples Person explained that United may need to buy Toney given Hojlund’s unavailability as well as the need for a proven goalscorer with experience at the highest level.

However, Erik ten Hag’s decision may be guided by Toney’s price tag, with United reportedly open to re-entering the race for the Brentford striker if his asking price drops below £40 million.

With time running out before the new season starts, United will need to evaluate where their priorities lie – acquiring a striker who could hopefully boost the team’s goalscoring capabilities or saving money in an effort to stabilise their finances.
