Fiorentina appear to be the latest side to show interest in securing the services of former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea.

The Spaniard spent 12 years at Old Trafford, guarding United’s goal under six different permanent managers.

However, the Red Devils’ current boss, Erik ten Hag, decided to show De Gea the exit door upon the expiration of his contract in the summer of 2023, replacing the reliable shot-stopper with Andre Onana, who is considered more suited to a possession-based style of football.

Considering De Gea was United’s number one goalkeeper until his final appearance at the club, many expected him to find a new top club swiftly after his exit. It has been 13 months since then, yet he remains without a club.

During this period, the Spain international has not been short of suitors, attracting approaches from Saudi Arabia, the MLS, as well as clubs from Italy.

The Peoples Person recently relayed a report claiming Fiorentina are planning to make “new contacts” with the player’s representatives in hopes of convincing him to move to Florence.

Now, La Nazione (via FV) suggest La Viola are “gaining confidence” about getting De Gea’s approval for the move.

The 33-year-old is viewed as new manager Raffaele Palladino’s preferred choice, and De Gea is also reported to be interested in the transfer.

However, Fiorentina are yet to find an agreement over his wages—which allegedly also played a big part in his move to another Serie A side, Genoa, collapsing.

It is understood his “unrealistic salary expectations” forced Genoa to end their pursuit and look for alternative targets.

De Gea was one of the highest-paid goalkeepers in Europe during his time at United, taking home north of £300,000 per week.

However, The Guardian have reported that money is not a “prime motivator” for the player, who is more keen to land an offer to be the first-choice goalkeeper at a major club.
