Former Manchester United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard has advised Andre Onana to leave Old Trafford if he cannot handle the pressure of being United’s number one keeper.

The Dane played for the Red Devils 29 times over the course of five seasons as a back-up player, winning two Premier League titles.

Onana on the other hand has had a mixed time of it at the club since joining in the summer of 2023.

Leaving Inter Milan with a huge reputation, he made some catastrophic mistakes in the Champions League before finishing 2024 in more focused style.

The Cameroonian has still faced pressure from pundits and the media with many questioning his goalkeeping technique, which saw him concede 85 goals last season and six so far in this campaign.

Speaking after his appearance in the Manchester United Legends game versus Celtic at Old Trafford, Lindegaard gave some tough advice to Onana via The Mirror.

The Dane began by praising the United number 24’s response to a stuttering beginning to life at United by claiming, “Onana has come back from a difficult start and now he is doing a lot better. But there’s no magic formula to overcome that pressure. That is the job. The job is to handle that pressure.”

He did warn that he was not out of the woods yet however and opined, “if you can’t do it, or you won’t do it, the job is not for you.”

Another fellow former United keeper Tim Howard, has also recently had his say on Onana and claimed he still has a lot to do to convince he is the right man to be number one at Old Trafford.

Commenting on his displays last year he said, “I wasn’t convinced last year, but right now he has a lot to prove. He has brilliant ability but he hasn’t put that into place and too many goals are going in that need to be saved.”

Onana spoke during pre-season how he wants to take more risks in possession and will hope with the introduction of the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui, he will have more passing options in the defence.

In addition, Erik ten Hag will hope that the signing of new defensive midfielder, Manuel Ugarte, will also do much to limit the amount of shots that Onana must face on a weekly basis as United’s keeper.
