The managerial merry-go-round is in full swing with a host of top clubs and coaches changing hands this summer.

Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been tipped for a bright future as a head coach after being linked with Premier League clubs.

However, the 42-year-old has agreed to extend his stay in the Championship with Middlesbrough as they bid for promotion to the top division.

Football pundit Fabrizio Romano broke the news of Carrick’s new deal, which will run until 2027.

Carrick impressed during his time on Teesside, taking them to the play-offs in his first full season and an impressive Carabao Cup semi-final run last time out.

Boro had to contend with a long list of injuries for much of last campaign, but the former United midfielder rallied his troops and was unlucky not to sneak into the play-offs for the second successive season.

The former Englishman has expressed his delight at his new contract but admits nothing will change in his approach to returning the club to the promised land of the Premier League.

“I’m really happy. I’ve always been pretty calm about it. I think having that commitment, that trust and that belief in the club is really important.

“We certainly have that – it’s what still gives me the great feeling I had when I first walked through the door.

“It feels like a big step as a title, as a statement, but it doesn’t really change anything that I do or how I approach it, it just continues what we’re trying to achieve,” he said.

Middlesbrough have been out of the top flight since 2016/17 and Carrick would be given hero status if he leads the team back to the big time.

Meanwhile, United boss Erik ten Haag is uncertain about his future with INEOS who are on the brink of announcing their decision on whether to be granted a third year in Manchester.
