England manager Gareth Southgate has given an encouraging update on Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw’s injury with just two weeks to go before Euro 2024 kicks off.
Shaw endured an injury-plagued 2023/24 season in which he made just 12 Premier League appearances and 15 in all competitions.
His absence was compounded by the fact that his deputy Tyrell Malacia was also sidelined with his long-term problem. Malacia didn’t see any action last term as his rehabilitation suffered multiple setbacks.
Despite his fitness struggles, Shaw was still included in Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad.
In naming the players called up, Southgate explained that Shaw faces an uphill battle to fully recover and be available for selection during the tournament in Germany.
The Three Lions boss spoke to the media on Sunday and hinted that the United defender now has a “good chance” of qualifying for Euro 2024.
Southgate said of the 28-year-old star: “I have to say he is progressing very well.
“I think I said last week that there was a lot of information that we didn’t have until we had the players in front of us working with us.”
“We are pleased with how he is progressing. There’s still a lot to do before he can get on the field in a game situation.”
“But he’s really happy with the work he’s doing with our physical performance team and our doctors, so, yeah, he’s got a good chance.”
Shaw is not expected to feature in any of England’s upcoming friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland.
There is no doubt that United will be looking to return to action when the national team face Serbia in the first match of the Euro 2024 group stage on June 16.
