Gennadiy Golovkin has been rumored to have been offered a fight against Terence Crawford in Saudi Arabia in 2025. If His Excellency Turki Alalshikh puts it on, it would be a big fight, as it would give Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) a chance to prove himself against the big-punching Golovkin at 160 or 168 to prepare himself for a clash against Canelo Alvarez in 2025.
A Fight That Sells
If the rumor turns out to be accurate, Golovkin vs. Crawford would sell on PPV and interest many boxing fans. If Crawford is going to fight Canelo, what better way to get ready than to take on his former nemesis, Golokvkin? Most would agree that Golovkin deserved wins in his first two fights against Canelo in 2017 and 2018.
Golovkin would need to lose a little weight to get in shape, but that shouldn’t be a problem because he can easily do it by early 2025 to take on Crawford in the perfect prep fight for the Nebraska native to battle Canelo.
“Some reports that Gennadiy Golovkin has been offered a fight against Terence Crawford in Saudi Arabia,” reports Boxraw.
The 42-year-old former unified middleweight champion Golovkin (42-2, 37 KOs) hasn’t fought since his twelve-round unanimous decision loss to Canelo in 2022. Even in that loss, Golovkin came close to winning and would have beaten Canelo if he’d started pressuring him earlier.
Golovkin’s Formidable Skills
Although offensively, Golovkin didn’t look great in that fight; he’d looked like 24k gold against WBA middleweight champion Ryota Murata in his match before that in April 2022, which was only two years ago.
We saw how Crawford struggled against ‘Little GGG‘ Israil Madrimov on August 3rd, winning what many felt was a controversial twelve-round unanimous decision. If that had been Golovkin in the ring with Crawford, he would have fought much more aggressively, attacking him relentlessly with power shots to the head and body, wearing down the soon-to-be 37-year-old.
Now, fans could see how Crawford will hold up under the real thing, Golovkin, who will be coming forward on the attack much differently than Madrimov did. If Crawford can get past Golovkin, he’ll be ready to advance to Canelo, but he may get there.
I can see Golovkin winning this fight. If he’s victorious, we’re looking at a fourth fight between him and Canelo. That would be massive for His Excellency Turki to put on in one of his Riyadh Season events.
