Gervonta Davis confirmed today that his next fight will be in December in Houston, Texas. He didn’t say who the opponent will be, but the WBA has already let the cat out of the bag.
They revealed that they’ve granted permission for Lamont Roach, the super featherweight champion, to move up to lightweight to challenge Tank for his belt.
Fans on social media aren’t overjoyed by the selection of Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) as the challenger for Tank (30-0, 28 KOs), as he lacks punching power and looked abysmal last November in Las Vegas, edging former Davis opponent Hector Garcia, by a 12 round split decision.
“DECEMBER, Houston #TheONE #LongLiveBABYFRANK,” said Gervonta Davis on Instagram, making it clear that he’s fighting in December in Houston next.
Tank Davis’ 3rd Super Featherweight Opponent
This is the third time Tank Davis will select a fighter from the 130-lb division to fight at lightweight since 2020. He defeated Leo Santa Cruz and Hector Garcia, both of which were pulled up from the super featherweight division to face Tank for the WBA lightweight title.
It’s believed that PBC will use WBC interim light heavyweight champion David Benavidez to attract PPV buys for the Tank vs. Roach card by sticking him in the co-feature and marketing that angle to the hilt to lure fans turned off by the disappointing main event. However, Benavidez is expected to face #14 WBC Jesse Hart as his opponent.
That’s not a PPV-level opponent to get the fence-sitters to want to dig deep in their wallets to shell out the $75.95 to order the event on PBC on Prime Video PPV. That’s about all they’ve got that will interest fans.
They won’t match Benavidez up with WBA ‘regular’ light heavyweight champion David Morrell because he might lose. That would ruin Benavidez’s chances to fight the winner of the October 12th fight between light heavyweight champions Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
