On Saturday night in Frisco, Austin FC produced their best road performance of the season, playing with real desire and confidence – not to get a 0-0 draw, but to actually go and win. the match.
The reward for those efforts? A tough 2-1 loss.
The Verde and Zi came out on the wrong end of FC Dallas’ third win of the season despite dominating possession (63% to 37%), shots (18 to 9), corners (8 to 0) and expected goals (1 ,9 to 1,2). ). It was the first time ATXFC had led all of these statistical categories in a road game in 2024.
However, two costly gifts from Austin gave FC Dallas enough of an opening to take all three points in a crucial Copa Tejas clash.
The first came just minutes into the opener when, of all players, Sebastián Driussi played an ill-advised pass towards his own goal, straight into the path of Dallas’ $10 million player Petar Musa. Musa took a single touch, then ran a simple finish past Brad Stuver for a 1-0 lead. It was Stuver’s first goal in 306 minutes of play dating back to mid-April.

“(Sebastián) knew immediately that he made a bad pass. Like when you make a mistake at your job, (you say) screw it and you just have to move on,” ATX midfielder Dani Periera said. “He’s our son and no matter what happens, we’re going to support him.”
Austin responded superbly, leading the rest of the first half and even rattled the post in the 37th minute from a powerful shot by Guilherme Biro. However, the club were unable to equalize before the half-time whistle.
Then, in the 56th minute, Dallas punished another Austin layup – this time from Jadér Obrian – that allowed a breakaway to be finished by Jesús Fereira to double FC Dallas’ lead.
Austin managed to pull a goal back in the 84th minute when Dallas defender Emmanuel Twumasi tripped Owen Wolff in the penalty area, allowing Driussi to score from the rebound. El Tree had a number of chances in stoppage time to salvage a draw from the match, but it was not to be.
“We gave this game away. I think both goals are notable for that. These are silly gifts from us,” said coach Josh Wolff. “We were unlucky not to get at least one point, but three points. I think, you know, it’s a performance worthy of that.”
Austin FC missed another chance to capture its first win at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, falling to four losses and two draws in that all-time streak.
Austin FC now faces a quick turnaround to prepare for its first midweek game of the season as the Houston Dynamo head to Q2 Stadium for another installment of the Copa Tejas rivalry on Wednesday night.
