From losing his club captaincy to a calf injury after regaining his place in the starting XI, Harry Maguire has endured a particularly challenging tenure at Manchester United.

Despite all his struggles, the centre-back’s commitment to the club appears to be unwavering. While Maguire was a key member of United’s starting line-up under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, even captaining the club, life quickly changed with the arrival of Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Almost immediately, the Englishman was phased out, with his captain stripped and his place in the starting XI taken by the highly effective partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.

At the start of this season, Maguire looked as struggling as before, however, that soon changed as Ten Haag found themselves facing a growing injury crisis.

With Martinez and Varane out through injury and Victor Lindelof struggling to stay fit, Maguire has become a key member of the defence, providing the club with much-needed relief and effectively proving that it would be a mistake to sell him to West Ham United – as appeared on the cards during last summer’s transfer window.

After some impressive displays such as a 3-0 Premier League win over West Ham, a 2-1 win over Chelsea and a legendary 4-3 extra-time FA Cup win over Liverpool, interest in Maguire remains high on London Stadium, with David Moyes reportedly still keen to sign Maguire this summer.

Since then, it has been a constant mystery whether Maguire will stay at Old Trafford after the end of the season.

Despite reports claiming he will be offered a contract extension due to his experience and ability to mentor up-and-coming talent, other reports suggest he could leave the club for £20m as part of Ineos’ planned squad overhaul.

Regardless of the truth, Maguire’s beliefs remained consistent.

It was reported last summer that the club would have to pay Maguire £10m to convince him to leave for West Ham. However, he refused to budge, clearly intending to stay at Old Trafford. This summer, it appears as though Maguire’s opinion has not changed.

The Sun reported that Maguire is “desperate” to stay at United next season regardless of who the manager might be. The British newspaper states that the English defender will talk to the club’s management during the summer in an attempt to convince them to keep him at Old Trafford.

With Maguire included in England’s Euro 2024 squad, he may have the chance to prove himself on the international stage to convince United to keep him next season.
