As United state on their official website, the clash is widely considered to be the opening act of a new Premier League season.
The Community Shield fixture pits the winner of England’s top flight against the victors of the FA Cup. This means that the game will be a repeat of last month’s FA Cup final at Wembley, in which Erik ten Hag’s men ran out 2-1 winners.
On that occasion, teenage duo Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo grabbed the goals to secure United’s win.
According to The Manchester Evening News, the fact that kick-off is at 3 pm represents a big win for fans, whose opinions appear to have been listened to by the FA.
Last term, thousands of City fans boycotted the Community Shield match as a form of protest against the FA’s decision to schedule their meeting against Arsenal for a Sunday 4pm slot, effectively limiting their public transportation options to return to Manchester on time.
This time, however, supporters will be able to get back on time with the last train at 9pm.
MEN adds that the FA also spoke to the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) over the kick-off time. MUST endorsed the move to have it at 3pm.
Proceedings will be broadcast live on ITV.
The upcoming game will be the third Community Shield affair between City and United.
The 20-time English champions have won both of the previous two clashes, in 1956 and 2011. No doubt Ten Hag will be hoping for a repeat of the same as he seeks to kickstart the 2024/25 campaign on a high note.
