Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has revealed that he’s still haunted by Alejandro Garnacho’s opening goal during the FA Cup final.

After an extremely poor 2023/24 season that saw United finish eighth in the Premier League, there was some welcome respite for Erik ten Hag and his players as they won the FA Cup.

The Red Devils beat Pep Guardiola’s City 2-1 at Wembley to win a second major piece of silverware in as many campaigns.

Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo found the back of the net before Jeremy Doku halved the deficit late into the second half of proceedings.

Garnacho’s goal came about as a result of some bit of fortune after Gvardiol headed the ball over Stefan Ortega, who had come running from his line in an attempt to claim the ball.

The moment of madness between the two City stars saw Garnacho have an open goal at his mercy, with all the time and space in the world. The Argentine youngster easily tapped it in to give his side the lead.

Gvardiol spoke to The Daily Mail and opened up on the incident. The Croatia international said, “I still feel angry about what I did.”

“I wanted to pass the ball back to Stefan. I didn’t see him, I thought he was on the line and I just wanted to head the ball back.”

He added, “Sometimes we need to talk more, to communicate more.”

United will meet City again for the Community Shield on Saturday 10 August at 15.00 BST.

Looking ahead to the clash, Gvardiol remarked, “I just want to win the Community Shield and show that we are ready for next season.”

“If we win that game it will be like a wind behind our backs, pushing us.”

Meanwhile, United return to action this weekend when they take on Arsenal at SoFi Stadium, in Los Angeles.
