It mightn’t have been their most convincing display, but Liverpool made it two wins from two to start their Champions League campaign, and Wednesday threw up some notable moments.
The Reds are just one more victory away from ending this run of games between the two international breaks with only one blemish, after goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mo Salah against Bologna.
Arne Slot‘s side showed plenty of potential in their forward transitions, but the final ball and some nervy moments at the back leave a lot still to improve.
Throughout Wednesday’s match, there were eye-catching moments noted by fans, including a bizarre performance from the referee!
Konate dumfounded after given yellow card

It did not get more bewildering than seeing the referee – Montenegro’s Nikola Dabanovic – serve up a yellow card for Ibrahima Konate and Bologna’s Sam Beukema in the lead-up to a corner.
The two were lightly grappling each other and jostling for position – as we see with every set piece throughout history – but, clearly, the ref got a little bored with simply telling them to stop.

Ibou’s look of pure confusion and bafflement was mirrored throughout the ground. One of the strangest and softest yellow card decisions you’ll see!
A yellow for Kostas, for this?
I’m sorry but the game is officially gone. How the fuck is this a yellow card? #LIVBOL pic.twitter.com/5lelU22LJR

And speaking of yellow cards, Kostas Tsimikas was on the receiving end of one despite cleanly winning the ball just outside the penalty box.
This writer was sat on the other side of the ground in the Upper Main Stand and could see better than a ref just metres away.
He’d fit right in in the Premier League!
Gravenberch shows off once more

It would not be a 2024/25 matchday without marvelling at what Ryan Gravenberch has got up to!
The Dutchman was, again, impressive with his spatial awareness, acceleration to get away from his marker and all round general play. He’s a true delight to watch.

Who needs to pass to a teammate when you can just pass the ball to yourself?

As Alisson returned to his goal to collect his water bottle and towel, he made sure to give a fan a hug and take a picture before rejoining his teammates in the middle of the pitch.
A small gesture it might be, but it will mean the world and we love seeing moments like this.
Salah’s goal in every angle!

For the third game running and for the sixth time this season, Salah was on the scoresheet and this one was a screamer. He didn’t get the curl right earlier in the game but nailed it for this one.
It is very similar to the one he scored against Chelsea, just a little closer to goal. Takes nothing away from the finish, though, it was exceptional.

And he looked to have taken Tsimikas’ celebration suggestion seriously!

This man better have a contract offer on the table, Liverpool!
