Football clubs can always sniff out a deal even if there are commitments and the stampede to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United this summer is getting stronger by the minute.

Before he fell from grace two years ago amid unproven allegations of rape and assault, Greenwood was valued at €50m by transfermarkt.comwith the likely transfer expected to rise even above that hefty estimate.

However, his market value has fallen and despite a successful rebuilding season on loan at Getafe, it has only recovered to €15m – although, again, the real value would probably be slightly higher.

Getafe have made no secret of the fact that they would take the player on loan again, but due to PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) restrictions, United are said to be more keen to sell.

According to A mirrorNapoli, Juventus and Lazio are all keen to take the United academy product to Serie A, with the Spanish side also willing to try that route if the price is right.

Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona have excluded themselves from the race, the newspaper writes.

The Times‘ Martin Samuel, meanwhile, claims that Atletico Madrid also remain in the race for Greenwood’s signature – although transfer guru Fabrizio Romano denies this – and that “apparently there are even a few suitors in our Premier League, although they are under wraps for now. ”

Contrary to other reports and Sir Jim Ratciffe’s comments, Samuel also believes United will not consider keeping the 22-year-old. The journalist suggested that United’s attitude was hypocritical, saying: “And that has always been the strangest element of the Greenwood narrative. That a club that needs to take responsibility for the man they helped produce is allowed to wash their hands and put the product in the bank.”

Samuel’s argument is that, if morally and ethically, United see Greenwood as such persona non gratathen the profit from its sale would essentially be blood money.

The only truly ethical alternative, he argues, is to loan him out until his contract expires and then let him leave for free.

Whatever United decide to do, there certainly seems to be no shortage of suitors for the player who was once United’s golden child.

Greenwood himself is said to want to stay at Getafe, but with finances severely strained, this seems an unlikely outcome this summer.
