Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Inter Milan midfielder and reported Manchester United target Nicolo Barella is set to sign a new deal to stay at his current club for the foreseeable future.

United are believed to be preparing to dive into the market for midfield reinforcements, with Barella a name that has come up on more than one occasion.

A report covered by The Peoples Person back in March claimed that Dan Ashworth – the man tipped to become United’s next sporting director – wanted to bring Barella with him to Old Trafford.

As recently as last year, it emerged that the Red Devils were negotiating with the Italy international’s agents to discuss the possibility of a transfer over the line.

United weren’t the only club chasing him as Newcastle and Liverpool were also credited with interest in Barella.

In the 2023/24 season, he played 37 games in Serie A and registered two goals and three assists as he helped Inter reach the Scudetto.

Barella primarily works as a box-to-box midfielder, but he can also play effectively in a slightly deeper midfield position. He boasts incredible strength and endurance, but he’s no slouch technically either. He holds the ball well and constantly impresses with his skills in possession.

The 27-year-old is a complete operator in the middle of the park and would be an impeccable addition to the ranks at Old Trafford.

Romano wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the player has committed to Inter and is all set to put pen to paper on new terms to extend his stay at San Siro.

“Nicoló Barella is expected to sign his new contract with Inter soon. Everything has been agreed, the salary and the length of the contract.”

Barella’s new contract runs until June 2029.

United will now have to look elsewhere if they plan to strike for him. Other midfielders believed to be on the radar of the 20-time English champions are Joao Neves, Youssouf Fofana (AS Monaco), Amadou Onana (Everton), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Joao Palhinha (Fulham) and Morten Hjulmand (Sporting Lisbon ), just to name a few.
