Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has cited the fall of three Manchester United players as evidence of everything wrong with the 20-time English champions.
United endured a very disappointing and underwhelming campaign which saw them finish eighth in the Premier League, their lowest position since 1989/90.
The Red Devils were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup and Champions League in humiliating fashion. However, there was relief for Erik ten Hag and his players last week as they somehow managed to pull off an incredible 2-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Ten Hag implemented an almost flawless plan and tactical approach that Pep Guardiola’s men simply had no answer for at Wembley.
However, the victory didn’t completely diminish how miserable much of the 2023/24 season was, and according to Fabregas, the fall from grace of Jadon Sancho, Sofyan Amrabat and Casemiro is proof.
After falling out with The Hague and engaging in a bitter public spat with the Dutchman, United made the decision to part ways with Sancho temporarily as he was sent on a six-month loan to Borussia Dortmund. Even before he died, the Englishman was struggling to make an impact at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Casemiro was unable to repeat the good performances he showed in his first season in England. On several occasions last term, the Brazilian appeared to struggle for pace in the Premier League. His erratic passing and reckless diving into challenges were also a constant source of frustration among fans.
Amrabat arrived from Fiorentina last summer with a lot of expectations on his shoulders, but he failed to live up to his billing. The Moroccan was unable to hit a consistent run of form and it wasn’t until the last two or three games of the season that he started to show signs of his quality.
Fabregas was speaking on the BBC’s Planet Premier League podcast (via A mirror) and said: “Manchester United will come back because they are a big team, but look at Jadon Sancho. He’s not doing well at United, he’s going to Dortmund and he’s looking like the player we all thought he would be again.”
“Look at the midfielder who impressed for Morocco at the World Cup (Amrabat), he was fantastic. And then he goes to Man United and is no longer the same player.”
“Casemiro won the Champions League after the Champions League at Real Madrid.”
“He was the best defensive midfielder in the world and then he goes to Manchester United and looks like a completely different player.”
“Obviously it makes me think there’s something wrong. It’s no coincidence that three top, top players come in and suddenly they’re no good.”
The future of Sancho, Amrabat and Casemiro at United is uncertain.
Casemiro remains strongly linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League. United are unlikely to sign Amrabat on a permanent deal and will almost certainly have to find a new club. Finally, Dortmund are thought to want to keep Sancho for a bit longer, but it remains to be seen whether that will be on loan again or on a permanent basis.
