The last 24 hours or so have seen Manchester United engage in negotiations for not one but three centre-backs.

United are thought to be in active talks with Bayern Munich to sign Matthijs de Ligt. Late on Monday, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the club’s hierarchy have also submitted an improved offer for Jarrad Branthwaite.

Now it has emerged that the Red Devils have seen their offer for Leny Yoro accepted by Lille.

It seems Dan Ashworth and company are targeting a drastic overhaul of their defence. However, that is not the only area in Erik ten Hag’s lineup that needs big investment.

In particular, United need a quality defensive midfielder to replace the ageing Casemiro.

In that regard, The Peoples Person covered a report revealing that the Old Trafford outfit have identified Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes as an able option to shield their backline.

With João Neves expected to be out of the club’s reach due to his €120 million release clause at Benfica, Gomes could prove to be a shrewd signing, having impressed many with his ball-winning ability and positional awareness in the middle of the park.

The fact that the Brazilian is also a Premier League-proven talent makes him an even more attractive option for United.

However, as per HITC, neither the player nor his club are in “any rush to pursue a transfer” this summer.

The Brazil international only moved to England in January of 2023, and it is being reported that he has “no plans” of looking for another “fresh start” at this stage of his career.

Gomes, who has attracted interest from United, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City, is tied to the Molineux outfit until 2028.

However, Gomes is not the only defensive midfielder United are interested in. They have also approached Paris Saint-Germain to explore the possibility of signing Manuel Ugarte.
