It’s become a constant talking point that Joe Gomez is yet to score in his 224 appearances for Liverpool, but we’ve come across a forgotten goal he scored for the Reds.

It seems that whenever Gomez crosses the halfway line at Anfield, someone has to be the person to shout “shoot” at the defender.

Screams are often met with sighs, but you can tell that Gomez is sometimes influenced by a bizarre anomaly in his career.

Maybe if he looks back through the archives, he can get the monkey off his back and ease the pressure with this goal we came across.

Back in the 2016/17 season, Gomez struggled with Achilles tendon problems and missed most of the campaign. However, he managed to perform for the under-23s towards the end of the season.

It was on 6 March 2017, in a 5–1 win over Reading at Adams Park in Wycombe, that Gomez scored his only goal in red.

OK, it’s not quite the same as scoring in front of a full house at Anfield, but for the then 19-year-old, it was a moment to take confidence from.

In Mike Garrity’s side, which included Trent Alexander-Arnold, Nat Phillips, Harry Wilson and Rhian Brewster, Gomez scored the first goal after just six minutes.

The shot itself actually required excellent technique, as it was a side volley from Wilson’s corner, giving the keeper no chance.

Later in the game, Brewster scored twice, Phillips scored and so did Ben Woodburn. Here’s the full lineup that night:

Grabar; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Phillips, Randall; Stewart, Grujic; Wilson, Woodburn, Ojo; Brewster (T. Gomes 75′)

What did Gomez say?

Gomez spoke about his goal drought, which includes his time at first club Charlton, but couldn’t quite explain why he hasn’t been able to find the net yet.

He told the We Are Liverpool podcast: “I score a goal in training, I get something in training.

“I don’t know, it’s strange because obviously for eight years it was never that obvious and now suddenly even the gaffer has given me a bit.

“He said he would give my wife some money if I scored!”

They will come, Joe. Just try not to force it!
