Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has insisted that he and his teammates can massively benefit from the winning mentality possessed by manager Erik ten Hag, ahead of their Community Shield clash vs. Manchester City.
United are set to take on City later today at Wembley, in a rematch of last season’s FA Cup final.
Despite enduring an extremely disappointing 2023/24 season, the Red Devils finished on a relatively high note by winning the FA Cup and clinching Europa League football in the process.
The trophy marked Ten Hag’s second price of silverware having also won the Carabao Cup in his first campaign at Old Trafford.
Evans spoke to club media and said that United can win even more trophies if they adopt the same mentality as Ten Hag, who has proven himself to be a winner.
The Carrington academy graduate stated, “The manager has been able to do that [win trophies] since he came here, he’s got a great record in the cup competitions and he speaks highly about the fact that he is a winner. We need that.”
“Obviously, we’ve had a couple of lads going away with their countries in South America – Licha and Garnacho – so we’ve got winners in the squad and want to add to that.”
“Winning trophies can only benefit you in terms of giving confidence to go on and win more.”
Last term’s FA Cup success was Evans’ seventh major honour with United having returned to the club last summer for his second spell after eight years away.
The 36-year-old reiterated his desire to continue winning and adding to his medal collection even after completing the set of major domestic trophies.
“I think the whole thing of coming back and winning a trophy with the club was incredible. I’ve been lucky but you always remember the last one, don’t you? I think it will stick in the memory for a long time and, hopefully, we can get another one this year and then that’s the last one to think about.”
“You’re always trying to look forward. We’ve already had meetings and you see what trophies are up for grabs this year. We’ve got the Europa League to contend with as well, obviously, and we’re in all of them to win it.”
“There’s another chance in the Europa League, we’re back in the cup competitions and in the league so there’s a lot and we’ll give it a good shot in all of them.”
Today’s match kicks off at 15:00 BST.
