Manchester United have agreed a new one-year deal with Jonny Evans after he impressed manager Erik ten Hag with his displays last season.
The club officially announced the update on Friday with Evans delighted at extending his stay with his boyhood club.
“I am delighted to have extended my contract at Manchester United for another season. To play for this great club and feel the support from our incredible fans is always a privilege.
“Returning to the club last season was an honour; representing the team on the pitch alongside fantastic team-mates under an excellent manager.
Evans stays
Winning the FA Cup together was an unforgettable experience; I know we can challenge for more trophies in the season ahead,” Evans was quoted as saying.
In fact, the Wembley FA Cup success meant the defender completed a clean sweep of domestic silverware, having won three Premier League titles and two League Cup in his first spell.
With both Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof linked with exits and Raphael Varane already having departed, it was imperative that the club held on to the experience of the former academy graduate.
The 36-year-old was a surprise addition last summer after eight years apart. He impressed Ten Hag during training with his acquisition initially aimed at helping the younger members of the squad.
EtH wanted Evans to stay
But the injury crisis that plagued the club meant the Northern Irishman ended up playing 30 times across all competitions and he gained in prominence as the season progressed.
The Dutch manager praised the veteran for his ability and his willingness to make himself available for the team and wanted to keep hold of the former Champions League winner.
His initial one-year deal ended in June but the club were locked in talks over a new deal. It seems INEOS have decided to back the manager and now Evans will stay on and hope to add to his trophy haul at the Red Devils.
However, he is unlikely to play as many minutes as he did last season with the 20-time English league champions targeting as many as three centre-back additions.
