Jurgen Klopp has made it clear he had no problem with Fenway Sports Group’s spending during his time at Liverpool, as they “never went overboard” like other clubs.
There is a belief among certain fans that Klopp was underfunded during his tenure as Liverpool manager, and would have had more success with more money.
But as he wraps up his final days in office, the German insisted he was pleased to have done it “the right way”.
“I could say now, ‘yeah, you’re not supporting me enough and I could have been more successful,’ but I never saw it that way,” he told reporters, including The Times‘Paul Joyce.
“We talked about it, but I would never make those discussions public. I did not want to express feelings to the outside world that we are not united.
“If we had an argument, then we have it internally, and externally we say: ‘Well, that’s our way, that’s how we do it.’ I don’t understand it any other way.
“If it would help to invite the public to the discussions. I’m the first to do it, but it doesn’t help.

“For us it’s the Liverpool Way. We do it right and the right way; we don’t spend too much, what we earned we always spend on the team, the stand or the building.
“This is a healthy club. You can say that Barcelona is not healthy, but it is still worse. I don’t think we could do it that way.”
FSG’s ethos in running Liverpool has been to ensure the club is self-sustaining and Klopp’s Barcelona example is the perfect way to describe what they are trying to avoid.
In his final season both Nottingham Forest and Everton were handed points for breaching the Premier League’s spending rules, while 115 charges still hang over Man City.
Chelsea are under investigation after self-reported financial irregularities under their previous ownership, which also overlapped with FSG’s time at Liverpool.
Continuing, Klopp emphasized that Liverpool “never overdid it” like those clubs.
“It’s not an emergency and you hear that beep beep beep and it’s close (flat),” he explained.
“It’s a really healthy, very vital club with a wonderful training ground, a sensational stadium, financially it’s not bad.
“That’s what I’m most proud of, that we managed to do it, with all the things that have been happening over the years, in crazy times, we never overdid it.
“These points deductions and things like that, it’s horrible.
“I’m not sure they were intentionally cheating, but they kind of knew, ‘mmmm, it’s probably not 100 percent right, but maybe we can work through it,’ and obviously they couldn’t.
“I really like the way we did it.”
