After years of poor investment under the inept Glazers following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United will have to be careful not to break the rules on profit and sustainability.

The new co-owners of INEOS will need to move players on first before thinking about recruiting and a big summer break-up is likely.

Already well-known players such as Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial have announced their departure, and several more are expected to follow.

This includes players who spent last season on loan such as Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho.

The former Manchester City academy graduate spent the second half of the season at Borussia Dortmund, and the club reached the Champions League final.

Sancho’s borrowing spells

The English representative had a serious argument with United manager Erik ten Haag, who accused the player of not giving his all in training.

The striker reacted in the worst possible way by attacking the boss on social media, while his camp insinuated that the manager was offering preferential treatment to certain stars.

Despite having the option to apologize and return to the team, the 24-year-old remained adamant and was subsequently banished and earned a temporary deal from Old Trafford in January.

The Bundesliga club would love to keep the Englishman, but are eyeing a cut price. The Red Devils want a minimum of £40m given the season Sancho has enjoyed at Signal Iduna Park.

A host of other clubs are ready to swoop in if Dortmund fail to agree a deal with the 20-time English champions, with The Daily Mail claiming Juventus also remain interested.

“Juventus have retained their interest in Jadon Sancho as Manchester United look to cut their losses this summer. The England international winger is available for around £40m in a knockdown following his season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.

“The Champions League finalists would like to re-sign the 24-year-old, but the chances of a permanent deal are considered ‘slim’ due to their current transfer budget and other priority targets.

“United have had approaches from a number of teams who have shown an interest in Sancho, particularly from Germany and Italy, but the fact remains whether they can meet the financial demands of such a deal.”

Juventus are rejoining the race

The Old Lady were interested in a deal in January as well, but failed to pull it off allowing Edin Terzic’s side to win the loan race.

However, the Torino outfit will find it difficult to match United’s financial expectations given that they are currently engaged in swap deals, as evidenced by their bid for another of United’s loan stars Mason Greenwood.

INEOS is unlikely to offer any further discount as it will already take a huge loss on its £73m start-up costs in 2021.

Another loan deal also seems unlikely as the need to raise capital is high. It will be interesting to see how Sir Jim Ratcliffe fares in the market given the club’s previous record.
