After conceding the most goals in over 50 years last season, Manchester United’s new co-owners, INEOS, are right to prioritize defensive reinforcements above all else.

Changes are already underway with Raphael Varane already set to leave, while Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have both been linked with summer moves.

Since the start of the new year, a number of names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with Juventus’ Gleison Bremer emerging as a top target for the Red Devils.

Bremer scored three goals and helped keep 19 clean sheets in 40 games in all competitions, breaking out in the top four percent of his peers in Italy for matches and duels won (according to fotmob).

Bremer interest

Rumors have been rife with reports that the English giants will trigger the Brazilian’s release clause to extend his contract amid interest from other clubs.

There have also been reports of a potential swap deal involving Mason Greenwood moving to Serie A with the Brazil international’s arrival in Manchester.

However, the Juve star’s name has barely come up in recent days with United moving on to other targets such as Jarrad Branthwaite, with the club reportedly planning a second bid after failing to land their man with their first offer.

TMW suggested that the arrival of Thiago Motta as new Juventus boss has changed the landscape as the Old Lady no longer want to sell the 27-year-old.

No longer a target

Considering the Turin side’s changed attitude, the 20-time English league champions have also drawn up a list of alternatives including Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio and Crystal Palace’s Marco Guehi.

“Manchester United have been chasing Gleison Bremer for a long time, but let go of the Brazilian defender for two reasons: the first because Juventus denied a possible transfer, the second because they decided to focus on Sporting Lisbon defender Gonzalo Inacio.”

Whether it’s the right call remains to be seen, but the new co-owners looking at young players, preferably with Premier League experience and eyeing an Everton or Palace star, makes a lot of sense.

Juventus have also reportedly demanded at least €70 million, something that keeps the player out of United’s reach given their precarious financial position this summer.
