There have been plenty of power couples in the sporting world. JJ Watt and Kealia Ohai, Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe, and Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens are just a few athletes who found love with a fellow sports member.

However, not all relationships are meant to last forever.

For a year, it appeared as though WNBA star Kelsey Plum and NFL tight end Darren Waller were among those athletic couples. While in the public eye, the two seemed to be happy together, it was a different story behind the scenes. After just a year of marriage, the two divorced in 2024 out of nowhere.

Plum, 29, is currently in her fifth season in the WNBA, all with the Aces. The point guard helped the team to back-to-back league championships in 2022 and 2023, averaging 18.3 points last campaign.

The fall marks Waller’s 10th season in the NFL. The tight end previously hinted at retirement, although he has one more year left on his contract with the Giants. Waller, 31, played 12 games in 2023, recording 52 receptions for 552 yards and one touchdown.

Here is what to know about the divorce between Plum and Waller.

Kelsey Plum-Darren Waller divorce

In 2022, the relationship between Plum and Waller went public. The two standouts were based on Las Vegas at the time they started seeing each, with Plum playing for the Las Vegas Aces, while Waller was a member of the Raiders. That lasted a short while, as the Raiders traded Waller to the Giants two weeks later.

It’s unclear when the two started dating, as both kept the details of their relationship private. Neither Plum nor Waller disclosed how they even met.

The connection between the pair of athletes seemed to be strong, as Plum and Waller married on March 4, 2023. The two previously applied for a marriage license earlier in the year on January 22, 2023.

Even after the couple tied the knot, neither shared any of the intricacies about their life together. So it came as even more of a surprise when it was announced in April 2024 that the pair filed for divorce. There was no explanation made about the split.

Plum released a statement on social media on April 23, saying she was “devastated” and “one day I’ll share my story.”

“I’m devastated,” Plum’s post read. “I walked through fire for that man, but now I see it’s time to go. God has given me such an incredible life, and I’m truly so grateful for the profound love from my family and friends. One day I’ll share my story, today is not that day.”

Waller did not say anything about the divorce since the news dropped. However, on May 30, he broke his silence in an … unique way. The tight end released a song titled, “Who Knew (Her Perspective),” which is all about his divorce with Plum.

The heavily auto-tuned song features an actress playing his ex-wife, while Waller is walking in a field and along a beach. He sings the lyrics to the fake Plum as she drives away in a yellow Jeep.

Waller’s tune may be about the divorce, but still, no exact reason was given for why the two separated. Until either Plum or Waller come out specifically and state why the marriage didn’t work, all fans have to decipher is the point guard’s social media post and the tight end’s song.
