Manchester United’s stunning FA Cup win against Manchester City managed to salvage some of what has been a miserable second season for Erik Ten Hag.
An eighth-placed finish in the Premier League represented United’s lowest-ever finish in the league and left Ten Hag’s job under serious threat.
The FA Cup victory left INEOS with a tricky managerial decision which would almost certainly have led to a change had United lost at Wembley.
A number of high-profile coaches have been linked with taking over the role should Ten Hag lose his job, with former club coach Kieran McKenna a surprise candidate.
However, McKenna looks set to be ruled out of the main job at Old Trafford, with the 38-year-old set to sign a new deal at Ipswich Town.
Football expert David Ornstein announced the news after positive talks between the club and the manager.
🚨 Kieran McKenna expects to sign a new long-term deal with Ipswich Town. The 38-year-old Northern Irishman is being considered by Chelsea, Man Utd and Brighton but intends to end speculation by committing to the future #ITFC after securing promotion to the Premier League @TheAthleticFC https://t.co/8NLmgWnblP

McKenna was the bookies’ favorite to take the hot seat at United this morning after back-to-back promotions with Ipswich saw his stock rise significantly.
The Northern Irishman was also shortlisted by Chelsea following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, but a return to United looked like a dream scenario for McKenna.
But with a new deal in the Midlands imminent, United will have to change tack in their pursuit of Ten Hag’s replacement or stick with the Dutchman for another season.
The news will come as a boost to Ten Hag who will be desperate to continue their work at Old Trafford after a season of injuries disrupted the team’s progress this year.
Back-to-back trophies represent a solid reign for Ten Hag, but some of the performances during this campaign have been well below par.
INEOS will be well aware of the need to resolve the position as soon as possible, because the situation is already turning into an unnecessary saga.
