New Manchester United signing Leny Yoro has opened up on his move to the club as he revealed the key role played by two former players.

United recently confirmed Yoro’s arrival in a deal worth £42m plus £10m in add-ons from Lille.

Erik ten Hag’s side warded off stiff competition from Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool to land one of Europe’s hottest defensive prospects.

Yoro certainly didn’t waste time in getting started at his new club. The 18-year-old was named in United’s starting XI to face Rangers in a pre-season clash at Murrayfield.

The Frenchman certainly didn’t disappoint. He produced a classy, calm and composed performance that earned him rave reviews from supporters and his manager.

Andre Onana described Yoro as a “quality” addition to the ranks during his assessment of the central defender.

Yoro sat down with club media and gave some insight into how his transfer to United got over the line. He named club legend Rio Ferdinand and Carrington academy graduate Angel Gomes as the two ex-United stars who helped him ultimately decide to seal a switch to Old Trafford.

Yoro and Gomes were of course teammates at Lille.

The France international said, “It was like two weeks ago [when I first spoke to Rio]. First of all, I was really impressed to speak with him and, yeah, we spoke like 10 minutes about Man United, so he helped me a lot to make my choice. It was really an honour to speak with him.”

“He spoke to me about the club, and that this is a historic club with a big story, and if I go there I need to fight for the club, to be ready, because this is the biggest club in the world. For me, it was really good to speak about this.”

“When I was younger, Rio was one of the best defenders in the world. I think everyone watched United when he was young and, for me, it was a dream to play for this club.”

Yoro added about Gomes, “We spoke a lot about United. He just told me this is the biggest club in the world. You know, the fans, even the way to play, the training camp, everything is really big, is really incredible.”

“So, yeah, every day I spoke with him about this and it helped me a lot to come here. He’s really happy for me. He sent me a message directly [after the transfer was completed].”

The new United n.o 15 expressed his excitement at playing in the Premier League, which he described as the “biggest championship in the world.”

He explained that there are no easy games in England’s top flight and that’s why he’s looking forward to get a taste of the action as soon as possible.

On the opportunity to play to play for United in front of their loyal fans, Yoro remarked, “It’s crazy. This is a historic stage and I’m just really excited to play at Old Trafford, to be honest. So, yeah, this is incredible. I already imagined me on the pitch. I was with my family there, and they were impressed too. So, yeah, we took a lot of photos!”

“You know, it’s one of the biggest stadiums in the world. To be honest, I’m really happy to be here. I’m really happy to play for this team and I’m really excited to see you in Old Trafford.”

Yoro told club media that he spoke with Ten Hag, who informed him he wants players obsessed with winning.

The former Lille man vowed to give everything on the pitch, even saying that he’s willing to die for the badge if need be.

United get their season underway on 16 August, when they host Fulham at Old Trafford.
