Arne Slott is reportedly planning to manage his options at left-back when pre-season begins, with two young talents expected to be involved.
Slott’s tenure as Liverpool head coach has begun, with the Dutchman officially taking over on July 1, as plans for a new era get underway.
He starts working with the whole squad either on holiday or on international duty, and his first meetings with the players will take place in the pre-season in July.
Even then, the first teams will mostly consist of young and marginal players, with key names participating in the Euros and World Cup qualifiers.
Two of those who will benefit from the opportunity are Luke Chambers, 19, and Owen Beck, 21, who return from loan spells at Wigan and Dundee.
The Athletic’s Andy Jones reports that Slott “wants to weigh and evaluate options at left back,” with Chambers and Beck under consideration.
Beck and Chambers in the frame
This comes with Andy Robertson on Scotland duty and doubts over the long-term role of Kostas Tsimikas – the 28-year-old has missed out on Greece’s squad to face Germany and Malta this month due to injury.
Slott’s arrival brings a fresh start for each player, which could see Chambers and Beck battle it out for a place in the first team.
Chambers spent the first half of the season as part of Jurgen Klopp’s senior side, making four starts against Toulouse and Union SG, before leaving for Wigan in January.
He immediately assumed a key role in Ligue 1, alternating between left back and centre-back in 18 appearances.
Meanwhile, Beck punctuated his time at Dundee with a brief return to Liverpool in January, covering the injury crisis and coming off the bench against Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The Welshman made 28 appearances for Dundee in total, progressing at left-back with two goals and four assists.
Both could be considered genuine candidates for a first-team role under Slott, having already proved capable at senior level.
Chambers has age on his side, only turning 20 later this month, and the England international also boasts versatility with experience playing at centre-back.
But Beck is more established at this stage, and this summer is almost certainly crucial when it comes to whether he stays at Anfield or joins another club.
There was ongoing interest from both Celtic and Rangers in January, suggesting that if Slott has no immediate plans for him, there will be no shortage of offers.
