Liverpool vs Manchester United is probably the biggest rivalry in English football and it could extend to this summer.

Football Insider reports that the Merseyside team have “concreted” their interest in Goncalo Inacio.

This spells trouble for United, who have long admired the Sporting Lisbon man and were reportedly ready to make a move for him in the summer.

Liverpool reportedly see Inacio as a long-term replacement for Virgil Van Dijk and are ready to pounce on what they see as a “feasible” price of £40m.

For that price, many United fans would argue that the club should try as hard as they can to beat their biggest rivals.

United’s interest in bringing in a new centre-back this summer is an open secret and the name most consistently linked has been Jarrad Branthwaite.

Everton are likely to open negotiations at £75m for their prized asset, so a deal for Inacio, who is a similar left-back, is a no-brainer in comparison.

In fact, if United were to allow Liverpool to move for Ignatius, it would also cause further dominoes to fall, none of which United will like very much.

This is because they have retained interest in Sporting players Morten Hjulmand and Ousmane Diomane.

The sooner Liverpool start raising money with their first sale, the harder it will be to seal a deal for a second player in the same summer.

United felt the effects of this when Ten Hag came in and all of Europe was watching the Ajax players.

They ended up paying £85 million for Antonio, a deal that could go down as one of the worst transfers in the club’s history.

The competition for Inacio is heating up with other clubs, apart from Liverpool and United, also interested, so the club would do well to clear up their manager and start making their own moves.
