A new report claims that Liverpool are still interested in Levi Colwill, however, there are at least three reasons why this transfer is unlikely to happen.
Having been linked with Colwill in previous periods, rumors had already started to circulate ahead of the summer.
According to Kieran Gill of the Daily mail“Liverpool like” Colwill and “Arne Slott chasing versatile left-back.”
However, his contract does not expire until 2029 and “Chelsea want the 21-year-old academy graduate to stay this summer.”
While it is clear that Liverpool have long been interested in the 21-year-old defender, there are several reasons why a transfer this summer is unlikely – price being the main obstacle.
Chelsea would likely command a hefty fee for their 26th man, given he is home-grown and signed a new contract last summer that runs until 2029.
On the plus side for Liverpool, the London club have to raise funds to comply with the Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules, but Chelsea appear to be doing this through fraudulent methods rather than selling players.
For example, Jacob Steinberg wrote in Guardian: “Chelsea’s accounts, published last weekend (April 14), reveal the club made a loss of £89.9m in the last financial year.
“That figure would have been £166.4m without the sale of the hotel from Chelsea FC Holdings Ltd to Blueco 22 Properties Ltd. Both companies are subsidiaries of Chelsea’s holding company, Blueco 22 Ltd.”
Although the Reds didn’t sign Colwill last summer, they were in the market for a left-back and early indications are that Slott will also be looking to improve in that area.
With the departure of Joel Matip, Liverpool are left with Virgil van Dijk, Jarel Kwansah, Joe Gomez and the injury-prone Ibrahima Konate at centre-back.
At left back, Kostas Tsimikas can play, but takes too long to get up to speed. Andy Robertson is still a quality player, but at 30, Liverpool must start planning for the future.
Given that Slott likes to play with attacking full-backs, the “versatile left-footed defender” the new coach is said to want would spend more time playing centre-half than hugging the touchline.
