United’s neighbors confirmed this afternoon that he will indeed miss the showpiece on May 25 with a “small fracture to his eye socket”.
Given the performance of back-up goalkeeper Stefano Ortega against the North London club when he replaced him, United will still have to struggle to get past City’s last line of defence. But there will certainly be a psychological boost to the absence of the 30-year-old.
Kevin de Bruyne was also ruled out for Monday’s game but said “I think I’m fine. It’s a little sore, but the Achilles spot is really sore. It felt like a knife the moment I got hit. It’s an impact (injury) so it’s not bad. Everything will be fine.” (source: Premierinjuries.com).
Not for the first time this season, United themselves could have problems.
Captain Bruno Fernandes returned from injury to play against Newcastle last night but had to be substituted towards the end of the game with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.
There has been no word from Old Trafford on the issue so far, so hopefully it was a cramp or a small change that has settled down.
Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford began their comebacks from injury yesterday, and there is hope that Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, Mason Mount and Victor Lindelof could be fit for the showcase final.
Both teams have one more game before they meet at Wembley a week on Saturday.
United have a tricky trip to the south coast to face Brighton, while City must beat West Ham at home to clinch a fourth straight Premier League title.
