Top Manchester United chiefs are reportedly set to meet on Tuesday, even as club boss Erik ten Hag comes under increasing scrutiny.
Ten Hag is under immense pressure amidst United’s run of extremely poor performances and results.
United followed up last weekend’s 0-3 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur with a frustrating 3-3 draw in the Europa League against Porto on Thursday.
The Red Devils were leading by two goals courtesy of goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund but they squandered their advantage before the break as Porto restored parity.
The Liga Portugal giants went ahead moments after the restart and it seemed like Ten Hag’s men were destined for another defeat, but substitute Harry Maguire popped up with the equalising goal in added time.
While United didn’t taste defeat, their collapse and tepid display at Estádio do Dragão failed to quash any of the speculation over Ten Hag’s position at Old Trafford.
Earlier today, Sir Jim Ratcliffe was asked about claims that Ten Hag could be sacked soon. The INEOS billionaire refused to back the Dutch coach and insisted that the decision to part ways with him will ultimately be made by the new leadership team.
Adam Crafton of The Athletic now reports that the United hierarchy is set to meet on Tuesday – 48 hours after United’s clash against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Ratcliffe is set to attend the match at Villa Park.
According to Crafton, “United’s executive committee have a long-standing meeting in the diary for Tuesday, which will bring together part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford, as well as recent appointees including chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox. United co-chairman Joel Glazer is also flying in from the United States to attend. There is scheduled to be a Manchester stop for meetings, too.”
“The executive committee also includes the club’s chief financial officer Roger Bell and chief operating officer Collette Roche. Since the INEOS investment, executives have aimed to meet once a month. It is not known at this stage whether the performance of the first team will be an item on the agenda for Tuesday.”
“Any ultimate call on Ten Hag’s future will come from the ownership, with Ratcliffe, co-chair Glazer and INEOS director of sport Brailsford forming a three-person committee. They would base their conclusions on recommendations from those on the ground, notably Berrada, Ashworth and technical director Wilcox.”
Crafton notes that regardless of who has the power to make the final call on Ten Hag, the United manager desperately needs his players to demonstrate immediate improvement vs. Villa on Sunday.
If the game goes badly, Ten Hag’s bid to remain in the dugout will be significantly weakened.
