Manchester United are reportedly ready to submit a second and better bid for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite after their opening bid was rejected.

Branthwaite is believed to be United’s main target in their efforts to strengthen Erik ten Hag’s defensive department.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a fantastic 2023/24 season as he helped Everton avoid relegation despite being stripped of his points. Branthwaite made 35 appearances and helped his side keep 12 clean sheets. He also scored three goals.

It emerged on Thursday night that United had reached an agreement with the player’s representatives on personal terms.

If he completes a move to Old Trafford this summer, Branthwaite is in line to earn around £150,000-£160,000-a-week, a massive rise in wages from the £35,000-a-week he currently earns at Goodison Park.

Less than 24 hours after the story broke, United were said to have submitted an initial bid of £45m for the England international.

This information was confirmed by David Ornstein of The Athletic, who said that an offer had indeed been submitted, although he stated that it was worth £35m.

The Times has provided the latest figures on the actual figures and why there appears to be a difference of almost £10 million.

According to the paper, United have offered Everton a fixed fee of £35m with £8m only being triggered if the player and the club reach certain milestones.

The Telegraph writes of the offer: “Everton are understood to view the bid as ludicrous and believe Branthwaite belongs in the same price range as Josko Guardiol, Harry Maguire and Wesley Fofana, who have all moved for fees in excess of £75m. over the past five years.”

“Everton face a struggle to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules and are reluctant to sell Branthwaite on the cheap, but sources at Old Trafford have indicated they have no intention of going up to £70m.”

Amidst all this, The Mirror reports that United will try again by submitting another bid for Branthwaite very soon.

“Manchester United are expected to make a second bid for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite after seeing their initial offer firmly rejected.”

“The club are not interested in selling and, amid suggestions United have agreed personal terms with Branthwaite, are adamant their Premier League rivals will not take advantage of them.”

Branthwaite’s contract with Everton runs until 2027, so the Merseyside side are in a very strong negotiating position.
