Manchester United 0-3 loss on Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur was their second consecutive league defeat at Old Trafford by the same scoreline after suffering a resounding defeat against Liverpool earlier.
After six games, United’s goal difference stands at an abysmal minus three and with seven points, this is their joint-worst start to the league campaign in the Premier League era.
Erik ten Hag does not seem to be getting the best out of this group of players with the team looking clueless against Spurs and the result could have been even more embarrassing if not for Andre Onana’s heroics.
Despite strengthening at the back over the course of the summer window, the team is still leaking goals with Lisandro Martinez’s form a matter of concern.
Leaking goals
Add to this the fact that Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are unlikely to be a part of the club next season and it is clear to see that another revamp of the backline is required.
A familiar face finds mention as per Fichajes.com who have claimed that the Red Devils will fight tooth and nail with Liverpool to try and win the race for Marc Guehi.
“Guehi has been on Liverpool’s radar for quite a few weeks now, and he appears to be the first defensive option for 2025.
“Manchester United also continue to accumulate defensive problems of all kinds are already working with 2025 in mind to fix these issues and for that reason they has shown interest in Guehi. The team led by Erik Ten Hag has listed him as one of its main wishes for 2025.”
The Crystal Palace star was close to an exit in the summer but the Eagles priced potential suitors away from a potential deal and there were rumours that the London club would offer the England international a new deal.
The 24-year-old’s current deal ends in 2026 and he could be available for a cut-price fee next summer.
Guehi remains a target
The Selhurst Park side were demanding £70 million this summer and the price could come down to between £40-50 million as per Football Insider.
The England international’s form for both club and country, where he has managed to usurp Maguire in the pecking order, and his Premier League experience makes him the ideal fit for what INEOS are trying to build.
It will be interesting to see whether the 20-time English league champions can afford to sign multiple defenders next summer with reports of another approach for Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton also gathering pace.
United are lacking firepower up front and need additional bodies in midfield and at left-back. If Champions League football again eludes the team from Old Trafford, INEOS could be hamstrung in the market, thereby decreasing the chances of multiple big-money signings.
