Members of Manchester United’s recruitment staff are reportedly “working in fear” as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS exercise greater control over the club’s movements in the transfer market.
Since Ratcliffe completed his partial 27.7% investment into the club earlier this year, he and his people have implemented a raft of changes across United.
Omar Berrada (CEO), Dan Ashworth (sporting director) and Jason Wilcox (technical director) are some of the individuals who have been brought in as part of United’s new-look hierarchy and leadership team.
INEOS also undertook to trim down the Red Devils’ bloated workforce in an effort to make the club run as a leaner and more efficient operation, while also ensuring compliance with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Another measure Ratcliffe took was to order employees to physically work from the office on a full-time basis, as he brought an end to the initially existing flexible working arrangements.
Now, according to the Manchester Evening News, there is some panic within United’s recruitment department as INEOS look to scrutinise its functioning.
Samuel Luckhurst points out, “Manchester United recruitment staff are on tenterhooks amid greater scrutiny of the club’s hit rate in the transfer market.”
“Well-placed sources say the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe as co-chairman in February has created a stricter recruitment operation at the club.”
“One scout said staff are working in fear as they are under the impression that jobs could be on the line if they make a mistake over a signing.”
During the summer transfer window, which was INEOS’ first one at Old Trafford, United brought in five established first-team players.
The 20-time English champions splashed in excess of £200 million to secure the services of Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
During his time at United, Ten Hag has spent a whooping £625.43million on signings, most of whom have not worked or lived up to their hefty price tags.
