Manchester United defender Aoife Mannion has revealed that the impact of changes implemented by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS is already being felt at the club.
Ratcliffe completed his deal for a part 27.7% stake in United in February and since then all attention has been focused on reviewing the club in an effort to identify areas of improvement.
At the moment, INEOS’ focus seems to be on Erik ten Haag and whether or not he should continue as United boss.
The end-of-season review is underway and its results will determine the Dutchman’s efforts.
Both the men’s and women’s teams had disappointing seasons in their respective divisions, but ended their campaigns on a relatively high note.
The women’s team beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at Wembley to lift the FA Cup – the first major trophy in their history. Meanwhile, Ten Hague’s men edged out Manchester City to win the FA Cup last weekend and sneak into the Europa League in the process.
According to Mannion, the club’s future looks positive and there is already a difference thanks to INEOS.
When asked about the pressure from the top team to be successful on the field, she said: “Definitely. It must be so. In women’s sports, whether you like it or not, you have to take those steps. Because everyone around you is taking those steps. So even if you think you’re improving, it’s more about the rate of improvement.”
“Many changes are happening behind the scenes in terms of the size of our staff and facilities. It is not clear that you can see it from the outside looking in.”
“But it has gone to another level, and with that comes the expectations of what the domestic campaign should look like, and then the cup competition. For us, we were able to end it on a good note as far as the cup is concerned.”
“But that doesn’t mean that’s been the feeling all season. So being competitive throughout the league is something we have to take to the next level, be more consistent.”
Mannion added: “There are changes happening and people who have had great reputations and done good things at different clubs. Those changes will take time. Day after day our days look the same. You come, you have a team meeting, you go out to practice, you come, you have lunch, you work in the gym.”
However, the 25-year-old pointed out that players are mostly shielded from the details of everything that happens around them.
