Manchester United may have lost some bargaining power in their efforts to sign Matthijs de Ligt as Bayern Munich reportedly opt out of recruiting Jonathan Tah this summer.

For a number of weeks now, United have been engaged in talks with Bayern over the transfer of De Ligt, but an agreement has proven difficult to find.

De Ligt has already agreed to join United and it’s believed that he has accepted a five-year contract offer to reunite with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the Red Devils were seriously contemplating exiting negotiations for De Ligt amidst Bayern’s £43million demands.

The 20-time English champions insist that they will not go higher than £30million – a proposal they consider to be more than fair.

Earlier on Thursday, it seemed like United had been handed a huge transfer boost in their bid to land De Ligt after it emerged that Bayern were given a strict deadline by Bayer Leverkusen to complete a deal for Tah.

Tah has repeatedly been mentioned as the player Bayern want to replace De Ligt. However, to get a transfer for the Germany international over the line, the Bavarian giants will first have to sell De Ligt. This development may have worked in United’s favour by constraining Bayern to accept United’s offer in an effort to make sure they don’t miss out on Tah.

Kicker now report that Bayern have decided to cool their interest in Tah – a state of affairs that could spell trouble for United and their chances of landing De Ligt.

According to the publication, “As kicker learned, Tah will not be moving to FC Bayern this summer – regardless of the sales that have not yet been made at the German record champions but are absolutely necessary. Honorary President Uli Hoeneß – on behalf of the Bavarian supervisory board – recently stressed that prominent players must be sold first before new ones can be signed. However, this is currently not possible (yet).”

“There is a lack of general agreement within FC Bayern. In addition, the deadline set by Leverkusen for the signing of Tah, which expires at midnight and which Bayern will let pass, is causing surprise among the Munich club management.”

Kicker insist that the Tah transfer is separate from De Ligt even as contacts carry on with United for the Dutch defender. This will however do little to alleviate concerns among the United faithful.

It’s worth noting that United were also previously mentioned as an interested party in Tah and now that Bayern are no longer after him, a situation could arise in which the Reds swoop in for the Leverkusen star.

The Bundesliga champions are thought to want around €40m for Tah.
