Long-term Manchester United target Jeremie Frimpong is reportedly of interest to his former team Manchester City.
The Red Devils have suffered defensively all season as they have now conceded 58 goals in the Premier League and unless they beat Brighton by four goals at the weekend, they will end the season with a negative goal difference.
Diogo Dalot was one of the team’s strongest players and he is about the only defender who was able to play consistently throughout the season.
However, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future up in the air, Erik ten Hag’s side have been linked with bringing in a new right-back.
Denzel Dumfries was reported to be wanted, but the latest reports seem to suggest that interest is cooling.
Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Frimpong is also a long-term target for the club, and Erik ten Haag in particular.
However, it has been suggested that United would only move for the player if they found a new suitor for Wan-Bissaka.
Although Leverkusen are said to be keen to tie the player down to a new deal, his future looks set to be away from the BayArena.
The player has been in good form this campaign as he has an incredible 14 goals and 12 assists from the full-back position.
However, HITC reports that Manchester City are now back in the race and Frimpong would be open to a deal with his former club.
“Manchester City have spoken to Jeremie Frimpong about a potential return to the Premier League giants for the Bayer Leverkusen speedster, with Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa also in the running,” the release said.
The Dutch full-back graduated from City’s academy before joining Celtic in 2019 and then Leverkusen in 2021.
Worryingly from United’s perspective, Frimpong has already spoken of an interest he would have in playing for his old side in the future.
Speaking to MARCA last summer, he said: “(Pep) Guardiola, really, was not my coach. I only met him a few times when I went to train with the first team.”
“It would be great (to come back), but I don’t know. They just won the Champions League (last year against Inter Milan) and are the best team in the world. In the future, we will see.”
Losing the player would be a significant blow as he has been a long-term target for the Red Devils and Erik ten Hag in particular.
Ten Hag clearly want to have more attacking full-backs and there are few, if any, in world football who can do it to the level of Frimpong.
What’s more, with a low release clause of £34m and just 23 years of age, whoever signs the player will get incredible value for money.
