Manchester United are set to sign Reading youngster Cameron Mpofu this summer.

The Red Devils have reaped the benefits of an excellent youth system this season as both academy products Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have played key roles. They soon became the two most important players in the team, and both are not even 20 years old.

The Under 18s were also wonderful, winning the treble, with Ethan Wheatley the featherweight who became the 250th academy player to make his senior debut for the first team.

Since the new owners of Ineos have been at the club, they have really prioritized youth development and scouting for key talent as United have signed or been linked with a host of young stars.

Highly-rated 14-year-old Silva Mexes Tyler-Earnshaw and 16-year-old James Overy have already joined the academy, while United are also favorites to sign Baylee Dipepa from Port Vale.

The Manchester Evening News now report that United are firmly set on another young talent.

The paper writes that “Manchester United are expected to sign Cameron Mpofu from Reading. Sources say United must go through a detailed Premier League process before finalizing a deal for the 15-year-old.”

“Mpofu has represented Scotland and England at international level and is set to join United under-16s. The forward made his debut for Scotland Under-15s against Spain in April. Mpofu was one of only three teams from English club academies involved.”

The young man was born in Scotland, but lived in England for most of his life.

Mpofu signed for Reading in 2021 after a successful six-week trial.

The striker will join an already impressive line-up of talented youngsters such as Harry Amass, Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey, who will all be fighting for their first team in the not too distant future.

Despite the Red Devils’ poor league form and disappointing season, with the exception of winning the FA Cup, the young players in the academy and first team are certainly a source of great pride and excitement in the coming years. The development of young people is certainly still of vital importance for the vitality of the club.
