Manchester United are reportedly trying to use Donnie van de Beek as bait to secure a deal for Inter’s Denzel Dumfries, who is a long-term target for the club.
United are likely to sell Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer and despite Diogo Dalot’s strong form, the club have been linked with a new right-back since Erik ten Hag took over in 2022.
United have been linked with an interest in Jeremie Frimpong, but with bitter rivals Manchester City also circling, that deal has the potential to become even more complicated.
Dumfries have been linked with the 20-time Premier League champions since Ten Hague’s first summer in charge and are said to be very keen on a move to Manchester.
Moreover, Dumfries was described by his representative colleague Frimpong as “one of the best in the world”.
The Dutch full-back is reportedly available for €25-30m, but in the summer when United will have to watch out for PSR issues and the very real possibility of no European football next season, INEOS will have to be smart to get the best value out of the market.
Interlive.it has claimed that the Red Devils could use Donny van de Beek as bait to sign Dumfries.
The Peoples Person reported the Serie A champions’ interest in Van de Beek yesterday, but it is claimed that Inter may not be able to pay the player in full.
The website reports “it appears that some intermediaries may have had the idea of using him (Van de Beek) as a pawn to bring Dumfries to Manchester United. In practice, an English club could come up with an equal exchange between van de Beek and Dumfries.”
However, the deal may never go ahead as it reportedly “doesn’t suit Inter from any point of view”.
“In the case of an exchange, Inter could evaluate only the name of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, whom United will try to sell in the Premier League for 25 million euros. However, there is little doubt that Inter are not interested in the midfielder at the moment: such a purchase would have no scope given the restrictions imposed by the Serie A and UEFA rosters.”
However, if a business partner is not found, then the idea of a swap could become more enticing for the Nerazzurri later in the summer.
“The Nerazzurri are not considering the idea of an equal exchange, but it could make sense as the days go by: if no one comes forward with a concrete proposal, Marotta and Ausilio could consider using a player whose contract expires in January 2025 to find a new full-back.”
If Erik ten Hag survives as United manager, Dumfries are a very realistic target, so it will be interesting to see if the Mancunian side pursue their interest or indeed offer Van de Beek or Wan-Bissaka as part of any potential transfer deal.
