Manchester United’s season ended with a victory in the FA Cup final and most of the team now turn their attention to the upcoming European Championship.

England are among the favorites and they have Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo representing the red half of Manchester.

However, as reported by The Telegraph, Maguire’s participation in the tournament now looks very much in doubt due to injury.

The centre-back is struggling to recover from a muscle injury which prevented United from finishing the season, including a triumphant crescendo at Wembley.

The 31-year-old has been following an individual training program since joining the Three Lions squad and looks increasingly unlikely to win the fitness race after missing the final training session before Friday’s game against Iceland.

The loss of Maguire would serve as a huge blow for Gareth Southgate, who has no quality options at the heart of his defence.

Maguire’s importance to England does not come without irony, with United regularly derided by fans for their struggles in recent seasons.

Southgate has until midnight on Friday to make a final decision and Maguire will be waiting nervously for an announcement.

If the defender misses out, he will return to Carrington, with his long-term future at United still up in the air.

Having narrowly survived last summer’s sale, the former club captain went on to produce a decent season as he worked his way back into Ten Hague’s plans – albeit with the help of a string of injuries to first-choice centre-backs.

United must now decide whether Maguire has done enough to secure a place in the squad moving forward, or whether they will cash in on a player whose market value is rapidly declining given his age and contract status.

Maguire has played more than 200 times for United since signing from Leicester City for £80m in 2019.
