Considering the 85 goals conceded last season, it makes sense that Manchester United’s first priority this term is strengthening at the back.
The club are currently involved in negotiations with Everton for Jarrad Branthwaite with the Toffees holding company for their £70m fee.
United have reportedly informed the Merseysiders to either set a realistic price or be prepared to leave without submitting any further offers.
It is well known that the club could need more than one centre-back, with Raphael Varane already announcing his departure, while Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have also been linked with a move away.
Todibo talks are still ongoing
One name that has risen to prominence since INEOS took over the club’s sporting affairs is OGC Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo.
With the same ownership, it was expected that a deal would not be difficult to complete despite the presence of several other suitors.
But United’s well-laid plans came crashing down as UEFA informed clubs under the same umbrella cannot trade players when playing in the same competition.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe called the decision unfair, and now HITC Football claim the 20-time Premier League champions have not given up hope of signing the Frenchman.
“Manchester United have been blocked from signing Jean-Clair Todibo from sister club Nice, but HITC understands they are working to try to find a solution.
INEOS in negotiations with UEFA
“HITC has been told that United officials are ‘frustrated’ by the situation and are currently in talks with Uefa, which published guidance to clubs in May on what counts as a club having ‘decisive influence’ over more than one club, which includes transfers.
“United believe there are precedents previously set that would allow them to sign Todibo and negotiations are continuing.”
There were initial concerns about United’s participation in the Europa League due to UEFA rules relating to clubs from the same ownership group, but INEOS has masterfully navigated those troubled waters.
This report indicates that a solution may yet be found with the British petrochemical giants in negotiations with UEFA. The Old Trafford outfit also have an interest in other Nice stars such as Khephren Thuram and Melvin Bard.
