Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Aston Villa midfielder Aston Villa ahead of the summer transfer window.
Midfield is an area of the pitch that United are looking to strengthen and this need will become more pressing if Casemiro and Christian Eriksen leave the club.
Casemiro remains strongly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, while Eriksen is believed to be on the radar of the likes of Galatasaray and Ajax.
Some of the United midfielders mentioned to be chasing include Joao Gomes (Wolves), Joao Neves (Benfica), Amadou Onana (Everton), Youssouf Fofana (AS Monaco), Teun Koopmeiners (Atalanta) and Desire Doue (Rennes), just to name a few.
According to Italian publication Calciomercato.it, United are also among a host of sides in England and abroad eyeing Villa’s Douglas Luiz.
The Brazilian has been a key member of Villa’s squad since joining them from Manchester City in 2019. Especially last season, Luiz played a key role as his team qualified for the Champions League ahead of rivals such as United, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Newcastle. Vila was last in the competition 40 years ago.
Luiz has nine goals and five assists in 35 games in the Premier League. Roy Keane has previously advised United to explore a move for the 26-year-old and it seems the legendary captain could get his wish.
United certainly know Luiz well. When he scored against the Reds in February, he wrecked Andre Onan as he shimmied a little in front of the Cameroon goalkeeper.
However, Erik ten Hag’s men had the last laugh as they eventually claimed victory. Luiz has been mercilessly mocked on social media by fans, current and former players.
Calciomercato.it explains that Juventus were thought to be in the driver’s seat to secure Luiz’s services, but face a “significant obstacle” from the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and United.
The midfielder has a higher valuation than previously stated. Instead of £40m, Villa are understood to be asking for £60m to part with their star man.
There is a chance that Villa could even demand more from the English clubs as they are essentially competitors.
Juventus’ main target to strengthen the middle of the park remains the Koopmeiners, but if a deal for the Dutchman doesn’t go over the limit, then the Old Lady will turn their attention to Luiz.
Luiz’s current contract at Villa Park expires in the summer of 2026.
