Manchester United are interested in Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle.
Andre Onana continues to be the club’s first choice keeper, already making ten appearances this season.
The Cameroonian has impressed in spite of his side’s poor form. He picked up the club’s player of the month award and has kept four clean sheets in seven Premier League matches, meaning he is currently leading the race for the Golden Glove award.
Turkish shot stopper Altay Bayindir was given the chance to play in the Carabao Cup, playing the entire 90 minutes of the 7-0 romp over Barnsley.
However, Bayindir’s future is still up in the air as he is very much second choice keeper at the club. This has led to links to other potential signings in the keeping department, as the Turk is frustrated by his lack of chances at the club, making only two appearances in over a year.
Subsequently, TEAMtalk report that “Arsenal and Manchester United are tracking in-form Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle as they look at bolstering their goalkeeping options.”
The 22 year old “has been in outstanding form for League One Wigan this season” as he has kept six consecutive clean sheets to “enhance his reputation as one of the best young goalkeepers in the country.”
The Gunners have held a long-term interest in the player and considered signing him in the summer as a replacement for Aaron Ramsdale.
United have recently burst onto the scene however as they are making “regular checks” on Tickle as they aim to bring in a young keeper to “provide cover and competition” for Onana.
Tickle’s age, talent and home-grown status are said to be appealing aspects for both United and Arsenal.
With the keeper’s fine displays showing no signs of stopping, Wigan are said to be “bracing themselves for offers for the shot-stopper when the transfer window reopens in January.”
The Athletic wrote last winter that the keeper “looked destined for the top” and is almost “Ederson-like in his driving technique.”
With a fine collection of young keepers already on the club’s books like Radek Vitek and Elyh Harrison, United’s interest in Tickle may come as a surprise. But Ineos have already proven they are always on the lookout for the best young talent domestically and abroad.
