Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has claimed that he would like to see Erik ten Hag play a more consistent side.

The Red Devils have had an horrendous start to the season where they somehow find themselves in 14th position with a meagre eight points from seven games.

They have also only managed to score five goals in their seven league matches and have drawn their opening two Europa League ties.

With the manager’s job very much on the line entering the October international break, Ten Hag rung the changes against Aston Villa, bringing in Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire to replace the out of form duo of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

Speaking on The Athletic’s Talk of the Devils Podcast, former United captain Bryan Robson claimed that he believes he knows what one of the major problems at the club is at the moment.

Giving quite a measured response to how he felt the season has gone so far, he felt the club had been unlucky to not win against both Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace earlier in the season.

He did admit that the side had “a couple of shockers against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur” but that sometimes games and results can go in strange ways.

Robson admitted that a draw against Villa was not “a perfect result and it is just OK” and that the season “is not going great” so far.

Commenting on what he would like to see moving forward he asserted, “what I would love to see is a more settled side, so then every week whether it is in the midweek, we have the same team playing together.”

The rationale behind this would be “so they are getting understanding and get a confidence together, since the start of the season the team has been changing around all the time.”

He claimed that he would be curious to see what a “settled side for like three weeks” could achieve as it might “develop a belief in each other” that we are currently not seeing in Ten Hag’s side.

Captain Marvel, as he was known back in his playing days, concluded by saying, “it’s a long hard season, it’s very early but we’ve started off not where we want to be” and he said that hopefully the team can start getting the results it needs to do shortly.

Robson’s idea of having a settled side in midweek and another at weekends is an interesting one, as it allows for rotation without having the constant changes that add to the confusion and inconsistency that has dogged Ten Hag’s teams for a considerable time.
